Bora Bora, often referred to as the "Pearl of the Pacific," is a tropical paradise that beckons travelers with its crystal-clear waters, overwater bungalows, and stunning natural beauty. Beyond its postcard-perfect landscapes, this French Polynesian island offers a wide array of activities and experiences that will leave you planning your next trip before you leave! Read on for 10 of the best things to do in Bora Bora:
STAY IN AN OVERWATER BUNGALOW
If you're going to spend the money to go all the way to Bora Bora, you might as well splurge on an overwater Bungalow where you can wake up to panoramic views of the turquoise lagoon, step directly into the warm water, and even watch tropical fish swim beneath your floor. Fun Fact: Hotel Bora Bora introduced the first underwater Bungalow in 1961. Today there are more than 8,300 in the world!
No trip to Bora Bora is complete without a dive into the lagoon's pristine waters. Explore vibrant coral gardens teeming with colorful marine life. You can snorkel on your own, but there are plenty of great snorkeling tours, led by local guides that will take you to the best spots where you're likely to encounter Manta rays, stingrays and black-tip reef sharks and more tropical fish than you can count! We love this full day lagoon tour that includes a BBQ lunch at a private island along with entertainment.
This is a great option for travelers who like to explore independently. For just under $175.00 you can rent a 13' boat with a sun cover that will accommodate two. A cooler with ice is also included and the staff will give you a detailed map and suggestions on where to visit. This is an amazing opportunity for honeymooners or couples on a romantic trip who want to spend some time exploring alone.
SPEND A DAY ENJOYING MATIRA BEACH
Matira Beach is the largest public access beach in Bora Bora. The water is crystal clear and the sand is soft. The beach is rarely crowded and there are plenty of shops and eateries, making it the perfect place to spend a day. As beautiful as this beach is, the shallow waters aren't the best for spotting ocean life so you may want to save your snorkeling for another day. Matira Beach is also known for it's amazing sunsets, if you can't spend a whole day having dinner and then catching the sunset is absolutely worth it!
When you're ready for a day away from the beach, spend 3 hours on an this amazing ATV tour that will take you to the Amanahune Plateau where you'll enjoy views of the lagoon before venturing on to the Rock of Anau where you'll be treated to views of Mount Otemanu. You'll stop for a tasting of exotic fruits before continuing on to the Canon of Faanui where eight cannons installed in the hills of Bora Bora by the United States during WWII still stand today. Each ATV will hold 2 riders at $250.00 per ATV this is a cost-effective (and really fun!) way to see the entire island.
This Jeep Safari Tour is another great way to explore areas of the island you wouldn't likely be able to see otherwise. For under $100.00 per traveler, you can spend a half a day visiting remote locations on Bora Bora via dirt roads. You'll visit the lookout point at Mount Popoti where you will 100% want your camera to capture the amazing views as well as locations on the island where you'll see WWII era guns and cannons. There are a maximum of 8 travelers per tour so you'll get plenty of personalized attention from your local guide.
VISIT THE BORA BORA TURTLE CENTER
Located at the private lagoon of the LeMeridien Hotel, the turtle center was born in 2000 when a hotel guest brought an injured turtle to the hotel's front desk. The hotel staff nursed the turtle back to health and when a second injured turtle was found the protection center began. Today the Turtle Center features a museum, an underwater observatory, educational aquariums, a touch pool, coral nursery and a laboratory. The center employs marine biologists and scientists and turtles are only kept until they can safely be returned to the ocean. There are daily turtle feedings at 10:30 AM which are very popular so arrive early if possible!
ENJOY A POLYNESIAN DINNER SHOW
Enjoy an unforgettable Polynesian feast featuring traditional dishes like poisson cru (raw fish in coconut milk), taro, and tropical fruits, accompanied by live music and dance performances. Many of the resorts offer these including The Four Seasons, Conrad Bora Bora Nui and the Intercontinental Bora Bora. Shows vary based on season so it's best to check with the hotels to see what is being offered while you are there!
This probably should have been first on my list because anytime I go to a tropical destination the first thing I'm doing is finding a sunset cruise or catamaran ride. There's nothing better than watching the sunset with a cocktail and the people I love. This highly rated Bora Bora Sunset Cataman Sail is two hours of pure heaven. Listen to chill island music while sipping a glass of wine and enjoying the included snacks in the comfort of a chaise lounge. Your captain and tour guide will find the perfect spot for you to watch the sunset over the Otemanu Mountain. Does life get any better?
RELAX WITH A SPA TREATMENT
Imagine a spa set at the edge of a lagoon, surrounded by tropical plants and the beauty of the Pacific Ocean and that's exactly what you'll find in Bora Bora. You'll find spas in all of the resorts and the offerings include everything from a couples massage to ancient polynesian rituals designed to restore balance and harmony in your mind and soul. It's well worth the splurge!
